Cathodic Protection for Structures

Specialty Testing

We have access to a wide variety of test equipment that allows us to conduct specialty testing and troubleshooting.

This includes:

  •  pipeline current measurement (up to NPS20 OD)
  • internal current flow analysis
  • complex interference testing
  • HDD Bore Testing

We also partner with industry professionals for custom and specialized testing related to external coating evaluation and remediation.

ICPS has an extensive background related to Internal Current Transfer (ICT) failures at insulated joints resulting from the operation of cathodic protection systems. This is a unique cathodic protection interference problem that is becoming more prevalent throughout the Oil and Gas production industry, and ICPS is well situated to help with the mitigation and inspection of corrosion losses.

What is Cathodic Protection?

Cathodic protection is the electrochemical manipulation of the natural corrosion processes. Since metal surfaces are prone to corrosion, especially when exposed to soil, maintaining the design metal in the cathodic (negative) voltage range eliminates corrosion on the design metal. A sacrificial metal is used as an anodic (positive) material, thereby sacrificing the anode material in the corrosion process. Corrosion weakens the integrity of the metal, creating structural risks for the entire infrastructure system, which can result in environmental risks, safety hazards, and the loss of assets for clients. Cathodic protection eliminates or reduces the corrosion rate to a negligible level by means of this electrochemical control.
